LITTERED WITH HISTORY
The 100-km-long Oslo fjord is a scenic gem and in summer the fjord buzzes with life and activity. A flotilla of islands, easily reached by ferry from the city, is scattered across the blue fjord, each with its own characteristics and history. Gressholmen, and adjoining Rambergøya, nowadays a nature reserve, is littered with historical landmarks such as the Christiania Vaabenøvelsesforening’s (Christiania Shooting Team) shooting range, founded in 1864, and Oslo’s first airport for scheduled aircraft (seaplanes), established in 1926, and in regular operation until 1938. All passengers had to be transported to and from the city by motorboat. During the Second World War the airport was used by the Germans for the repair of aircraft engines. The landing ramp and the hangar are still intact and now used by Gressholmen Båtforening (Gressholmen Boating Association).
Gressholmen is a popular tourist destination as it offers great places for swimming and sunbathing. To combat littering the municipality of Oslo, who owns the island, enlisted SF Marina to install a 15-metre-long and 4-metre-wide floating waste disposal station. The new pontoon houses three 5-cubic-metre-big Molok® Deep Collection™ waste containers that are emptied from the water using a crane mounted on a garbage collection workboat. The pontoon is secured using heavy-duty chains and precast concrete anchors. The floating waste disposal station connects to the shoreline via a 6-metre-long walkway that also accommodates water fluctuations. The pontoon was designed and built by SF Marina in Sweden and shipped to Oslo.
The waste disposal station was installed in 2022, while a floating marina offering 63 berths, also designed by SF Marina, was delivered to Gressholmen Båtforening, in 1997.
