NEWPORT – THE QUEEN OF SUMMER RESORTS

Newport, Rhode Island, situated at the mouth of Narragansett Bay, is known as the Sailing Capital of the World. It was the location of the America’s Cup between 1930 and 1983, when Australia II ended the longest winning streak in the history of sport. Being the oldest summer resort in the USA, Newport is also known as the Queen of Summer Resorts, and America’s wealthiest families flocked to the area with its beautiful cliffs and beaches. They started building summer homes there in the 1850s and continued through to 1900. The Breakers, the 70-room summer residence of the Vanderbilt family, is the grandest of Newport’s famous mansions.

The Newport Shipyard marina, within walking distance of downtown Newport, forms part of Safe Harbor’s network spanning a portfolio of 100 marinas across 22 states. The Newport Shipyard can accommodate up to 48 107-metre yachts and is protected from Narragansett Bay’s rough waves by the most advanced floating wave attenuator available. The 117-metre floating breakwater was designed and built by SF Marina in Norfolk, Virginia. In 2020, SF Marina replaced one of Newport Shipyard’s old wooden docks with a state-of-the-art floating dock system, made up of eight floating pontoons, configured as fingers ranging in width from 2.6 metres to 4.3 metres. The pontoons are anchored using internal pile guides. Utilities, such as power, water, pump-out and communications, are routed through internal ducts.
