Baltimore rebuilds a lifeline on the water

Baltimore, Maryland, is a city shaped by its connection to the sea. From the historic Inner Harbor to its vibrant neighbourhoods and cultural landmarks, the city offers a rich blend of maritime heritage and modern urban energy. Known for attractions like the National Aquarium, Fort McHenry, and a lively arts and food scene, Baltimore remains a major commercial port on the US East Coast. Protecting this dynamic harbour is the responsibility of the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD), one of the oldest fire departments in the country. Since 1859, the BCFD has provided fire and rescue services both on land and at sea, responding to emergencies ranging from onboard medical and fire incidents to large-scale disasters like the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

To support its marine operations, BCFD recently completed a full rebuild of its marine fire and rescue docks. Though located in a relatively sheltered part of the harbour near Fort McHenry, the previous dock system had deteriorated over time and no longer met the department’s safety or capacity needs. The new floating concrete dock system from SF Marina offers enhanced stability, durability, and seamless integration with the station’s existing infrastructure. Designed to support fast, safe access to a variety of emergency vessels, the docks feature low freeboard for easy boarding of smaller vessels, cantilevered stainless steel ramps for larger vessels, and integrated utility ducts for power and water to keep the docks clear and uncluttered. Additional upgrades include lighting, mooring systems, and boat lifts, that will future-proof the facility for years to come. With its updated marine base, BCFD is better equipped than ever to respond swiftly and effectively – reinforcing Baltimore’s long-standing commitment to safety, service, and resilience along its storied waterfront.
